Love Fragments
Aleksandra Đorđić Rudan

Photography is time transformed into emotion; it does not preserve a moment, but a feeling.

Wedding photography, a synergy of responsibility and art, is a distinct genre of photography in which the author focuses on recording activities, events and emotions related to the nuptials. The task, or rather the challenge of the photographer, is to permanently record moments that the audience will keep returning to, always with the same goal – to relive happy moments.

Wedding photography has changed over time; the former formal posing and traditional style have given way to a documentary-reportage approach and today’s dominant modern/artistic style with the use of creative lighting, unusual angles and an emphasized atmosphere. The wedding industry is dynamic, competitive and aesthetically refined, and photographs are an extremely important segment in a time when everything that exists in the earthly reality dimension also lives behind the ever-present screens, in the virtual world. The once exclusive black-and-white portrait of shy newlyweds framed above the marital med has been replaced by hundreds of photographs in digital format, among which the selected ones will find their place in a wedding album or a photo book.

The sixteen featured works are a cross-section of Aleksandra Đorđić Rudan’s rich opus of wedding photography created over the past ten years. The round anniversary of artistic creativity has become an invitation for a retrospective and a review of the “product” of technical knowledge, creativity and passion. With the exception of one colour photograph, all the remaining works are monochrome. Elegant and timeless, black-and-white photographs highlight emotions in the best possible way and emphasize details. By using only one tone and carefully dosing the lighting, the author has elevated strong individual and group portraits, moments of celebration and expression of love, ‘casual’ exterior shots and compositionally flawless shots of newlyweds above the level of commercial/craft photography into the sphere of artistic, poetic visuals that confidently exist outside the context of the wedding.

Emotions are prevalent and tangible in all of Aleksandra’s photographs. With the eye of the camera, she captures the most powerful aspect of every wedding – the sincere, spontaneous and tender feelings of those present. She creates emotionally authentic works with touching scenes. By unobtrusively positioning herself in the space among the guests, she manages to tell the story with the energy, looks and attitude of the protagonists, while in the set-up photography of newlyweds, she expertly and skilfully finds the best angle for photographs of timeless moments of closeness and love.

The sole colour photograph, Aleksandra’s most famous and multi-awarded photograph, is a tribute to Labin and the fairy-tale ambiance of its old town core with its playful colours. The diagonal composition with lines of harmonious rhythm with the newlyweds literally and figuratively stepping into life together is both an artistic hit and a business card for all those future spouses now searching the internet for a wedding photographer.
